What is using so much water?

Does your water bill seem unusually high? Water usage varies a great deal across the country and from household to household. Estimates vary, but recent research tells us that the average American uses 80-100 gallons of water per day.

We may not be able to see exactly why your water usage is higher, but here are some things to keep in mind:

  • How many roommates do you have? Each person contributes significantly to water usage!
  • Did you know the largest use of household water is used to flush the toilet? After that, showers and baths. Over 50% of your water usage can come from these sources!
  • Try waiting until your washing machine or dishwasher are full before using them--you could be saving gallons of water! Depending on your faucet, and the inefficiency of hand-washing, the dishwasher might actually save you on gallons of water each day.
  • Do not dismiss a leaky or dripping faucet. Leaks or slightly open faucets can contribute to a significant portion of your water bill. If something seems clearly wrong, invite your residential maintenance out to take a look!

Is your water usage the same as last year? Keep in mind that rates also increase year to year, just like the price of your cell phone or gasoline increases over time!
